Manchester United have struggled to nail their transfer deals for years, and it has been a huge overpaid for teams that struggled with delivering their fees
Manchester United’s continued failure in the transfer market is best summarized by research and data showing that their team is worth more than £300 million than they actually paid.
All clubs are looking for the value of recruitment. Sign signers who are getting fewer players than they actually are worth or are moving towards Blossom and who are much more valuable than they originally paid. For United, they created the habit of doing the opposite.
Gary Neville previously declared Old Trafford a “cemetery” for players and managers, with the numbers confirming the statement. United’s teams show the biggest deficit in the Premier League, with costs on actual value.
The negative is £322.9 million. They spent £1.1 billion, but their team is actually worth £769 million by TransferMarkt. For context, Arsenal is the best in the Premier League in this division. Their team is worth more than £315.9 million than they actually paid – £826 million vs £1.1 billion. Because players like Martin Odegaard and William Saliba are much more valuable than they bought.
Manchester City is also ranked highly. Liverpool and Newcastle are also positive, helping their ambitions. It’s a shame for United, and you don’t need to see far away that their transfers are worthless.

The actual cost to value often finds yourself negatively for two reasons. First, players were purchased for big money later in their careers, only to have their value declined. Secondly, players are purchased, but they cannot meet expectations.
An example of a player landing when its value is declining is Casemiro. The Brazilian joined from Real Madrid for £70 million – and while he enjoyed his positive debut season, Red Flag quickly paid big wages, but didn’t perform like he did.
Meanwhile, the list of players signed with big fees has not only been lurking, but has been around for over a decade. United spent the entire summer, failing to get the best of them from their books some of their big names.
Antony took part in the summer of 2022 for £81 million. A year ago and Jadon Sancho cost £72 million. Now United are good to retrieve half of these numbers if they move to either player before the transfer window closes within a week.
Harry Maguire is a marquee who signed in for Ole Gunner Solskal’s first summer in 2019, and has been in six seasons from the England defender, but is valued at just £11m, costing a world record of £80m.
This summer is much more measured. Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were signed for £206 million. The former two have proven to be Premier League performers, but Sesko is considered one of Europe’s best young strikers and should represent the value of his money during his tenure in Manchester.
It’s a marked improvement from the first summer of INEOS 12 months ago, many of them age poorly and cost the club. Erik Ten Hag was allowed to pursue a specific target, but Joshua Zirkzee, signed for £36.5 million, is currently worth £25 million. Manuel Ugarte is another player representing a large loss. As a result, United will be very heavy on red.
