“We’re the best team in the world,” Alejandro Garnacho told Manchester United after joining Reuben Amorim’s struggling side of Chelsea. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, beating relegated butler Burnley 3-2 yesterday thanks to a 97-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandez.
A few days ago, United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round, and was penalised to League 2 Grimsby Town. It leaves the FA Cup as the only plausible trophy of this season that can win despite the fact that it’s only August. However, Garnacho is not part of the cause of the Red Devils who traded United to Chelsea in a £40 million move on Saturday.
The 21-year-old Argentine International will be taking part in a seven-year contract and compete with Jamie Gittens for the left-wing starting spot. Garnacho, representing United’s fourth-largest sale to date, is also available to play on the right side and is considered a true coup for the Blues.
He was at Stamford Bridge and saw Chelsea beat Fulham 2-0, reminding him of the London Club’s recent success former employer United.
Garnacho has been warned by another former Chelsea attacker, Joe Cole, that he will have to work hard after dropping out with Reuben Amorim at Old Trafford. Cole said on TNT Sports:
“He looks sensational and has moments that look outstanding. I think Manchester United is probably not a great environment for younger players. I’ve seen players like (Scott) McTominay leave and thrive.
“Garnacho has a level of uplifting. I think it’s a good price for Chelsea. There’s a question mark for the young people. I think what comes out of his camp and what comes out of his camp, and how he’s gone down at Manchester United will need to be improved.
“If he wants to beat the knuckles and become a top player he can, he needs to come in a good environment where Chelsea is and grows from there. But there’s a lot of competition for those wide positions.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea have stepped out of their contract to lend and send Nicholas Jackson to Bayern Munich for the season. The striker is expected to return to London in the coming days as he signed a summer injury to Liam Dellup.
