Liverpool will not be able to host Real Madrid again at Anfield in the Champions League next season.
Liverpool welcomes Real Madrid to Anfield in the Champions League on a night that Trent Alexander Arnold may not be looking forward to. However, this season’s Merseyside conflict means that if they’re in the league phase of the next season, they won’t be able to face off again at Anfield.
The pair play against each other in two consecutive campaigns following a format overhaul. The Reds won 2-0 at Merseyside last November and welcomed Madrid once again in the coming months after they paired together in Thursday’s draw.
It was the 13th opportunity they had collided at the European Football Premier Club Competition, and all bars will occur within the last 16 years. However, there were only two previous meetings in 2014, and they were in the group stage. All of their other meetings were part of the knockout stage, including three finals (1981, 2021, 2022).

However, they will not meet again at Anfield in the league phase of the following season, pursuant to paragraph 16.03 of the UEFA Champions League regulations.
“The UEFA administration has stated that it may adapt the terms of the draw to determine alternative conditions for a draw in accordance with the principles set by the Club Competition Committee, to avoid deadlock situations and to take into account the relevant constraints in light of decisions made by the UEFA Executive Committee.
As part of the lottery procedure adopted, the UEFA Club Competition Committee has determined additional conditions that can be applied to draws in the UEFA Champions League for the 2026/27 season, and that individual fixtures between the same two teams will not be repeated in the same competition with the same home team in three consecutive seasons.
“This means that teams that have already faced off in the UEFA Champions League league phase of the 2024/25 season will be playing against each other again on the same home team in the UEFA Champions League league phase of the 2025/26 season, with each other at other team venues).
