Manchester United dealt with a cruel injury setback during Saturday’s Premier League match against Burnley when Matthews Cunya was forced with what appears to be a hamstring injury. The £62.5 million Brazilian summer signature was managed within 30 minutes of the Old Trafford collision, with Reuben Amorim showing his head in his hand, and after a well-played Cunha fell on the grass with apparent discomfort. Portuguese coaches are eager to see that the problem is not serious.
Shortly after United took the lead against the newly promoted Clarett, Cunya went through trouble after the sprint. He quickly headed for the tunnel and didn’t even get medical treatment from Physio before leaving the pitch. His sudden departure seemed to surprise United manager Amorim, as there was no substitute ready to intervene in the former wolf striker. Eventually, Joshua Zilky gets caught up in the action.
United’s only silver lining is that they’re heading for an international break, with no other matches for two weeks. On the downside, their next fixture is the Manchester Derby against Etihad’s City.
Despite United’s struggles to start the season, including a humiliating defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, Cunya began to find his feet and make the mark. Given his No. 10 shirt at the club, he is expected to establish himself as one of Amorim’s dual 10s in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, but has mainly served as the main focus of the club’s offense since his arrival.
Despite not scoring yet, there was a flash of sparkle that made him a favorite with Molyneux last season and made him one of the premier league standout attackers.
United took a 1-0 lead at halftime courtesy of Josh Cullen’s own goal, and the opener opened just before he was forced to leave the pitch.
Amorim praised Kunya earlier this month.
“When you play some games and he loses, he’s another guy and that’s a good thing. I’m really happy with him and the others because he has some traits that I missed last season.
“I think they (the fans) have people like Matheus and Bruno (Mbeumo) and everyone who can lift the place, so I think we’re looking forward to it.”
