Reuben Amorim admitted that he “want to quit sometimes” as Manchester United head coach, explaining his concerning comments after Wednesday’s shock loss to Grimsby Town. The Red Devils led to a humiliating defeat to League 2 opposition in the second round of the Carabao Cup, increasing scrutiny about Amorim’s position.
The Portuguese boss’ post-match response raised concerns about whether he was ready to leave during the international break in September. Amorim revealed his actions at Brandel Park ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley, who is looking for United’s first victory of the season.
“Guys, be really honest with you, every time we have one such defeat, I’m going to be like that,” Amorim told reporters in Carrington on Friday.
“Sometimes I’m going to say I hate my players. Sometimes I’m going to say I love my players, and that’s how I do it.
“At that moment I thought there was a really good preseason, which really upset me and I was really disappointed.
“We were consistent in the way we played. It’s a new game now and I’m focused on the game. I need to live these days. I understand that.”

He added: “If you’re doing this kind of behavior, you need to understand that sometimes you have the opposite side of the coin with the good one.
Amorim expanded what hurt him about United’s defeat at Grimsby and said, “I think that’s the most difficult part of the defeat.
“It’s not the outcome, it’s whether we lost that game or portrayed that game. It’s a small thing. We’re fighting for the ball and running.”
Kobbie Mainoo’s uncertainty about the future added to the overly familiar sense of crisis at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old midfielder wants to be loaned out more regularly before the Monday deadline.

However, Amorim confirmed that United had no plans to let him leave and insisted that Minee was in his plans this season.
“Until (Mainoo’s Future) is official, I can’t say much. I want Kobbie (Mainoo) to stay. He needs to fight for his place,” explained Amorim.
“We need Cobbies. We understand that players who aren’t playing at this moment are disappointed. You have to compete that week.”
The United boss previously revealed that Mainoo is competing against club captain Bruno Fernandez for the opportunity after giving zero minutes in two Premier League matches.
