Manchester United boss Reuben Amorim was torn apart by the players following the shocking Carabao Cup exit at the hands of the town of League 2 side Grimsby. The Red Devils were embarrassedly thrown out of the competition after losing in a penalty shootout after a disastrous 2-2 draw.
Amorim did not just stop at a post-match interview with Sky Sports. He expressed his disappointment and frustration at his team’s inactive performance. He said: “It doesn’t matter if you’re recovering or not in the end. I know that the best team, the only team on the pitch, won. You can win any group of players, so the best players lose.”
He then inexplicably added: “I think the players spoke really loudly today. The best teams won. I think it’s really clear what they talked about. Let’s continue today. I think it was really clear what happened today.”
When asked about what went wrong on his side, he replied: “I don’t know. Ideas of pressure, not just space, but how we started the game without strength. We were completely lost. They spoke really loudly.
“I think (same issue) is the problem. You see something new and it’s not. We’re sorry to the fans. The support they gave us in all the defeats, I’m really sorry.
“I think they (the players) responded on the pitch today, so I don’t need to talk about it. We have a game on the weekend, we spend two weeks and we organize things.”
Andre Onana had a forgotten night at Grimsby, but Amorim refused to point his fingers to the Cameroonians alone. Amorim’s frustration grew when he answered the question, saying, “When we’re a team in the fourth division with respect, it’s all. Not just the goalkeeper, it’s all about the details. My players really spoke loudly.”
The Red Devils are hoping to win the first victory of this weekend’s season as they host the newly promoted Burnley at Old Trafford.
In other news, Grimsby was rewarded with a draw against Championship side Sheffield on Wednesday after passing the Red Devils.
