New Tottenham captain Christian Romero signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2029. The much-declared World Cup winner across Europe signed a new contract after being appointed captain by new boss Thomas Frank following the £19.5 million move to LAFC.

Romero remained on his previous contract for two years, which ran until June 2027, and was interested in Atletico Madrid in the summer. However, the Spurs are determined to keep him in North London, and Frank is impressed by Romero’s character and training ground display, and he became a skipper and the player who joined in 2021 for £47 million from Juventus chose to extend his stay at the club.

After creating a skipper for Romero, Frank revealed: “I think I’ve been working closely with him for over five weeks. I’ve seen very well-trained, very dedicated players. The staff have said they’ve never seen him in a very good place. He sees players who want to lead the team and push the team.”

The new boss was keen to have two Copa America winners stayed for a long time and grow further as leaders under his leadership.

“When I named the captain, I think it’s because I think he’s the best he can help his team now and in the future,” he explained. “That doesn’t really link to the contract situation, and of course he’s a very good player, so I want him to stay longer.

“I see a very big and very good player. What I like about him and the reason I chose him as captain is his leadership qualities on the pitch and there is great respect for him from the players.

“Of course, when I was 27, I thought I could do everything, but as a leader I now find that 1,000 percent is better.

Romero felt a great deal of pride after being given an armband by Dane, and in a rare English interview with the club, “I am very pleased to be the club’s first team captain. Today, we (he and Frank) spoke before training.

“That’s a big responsibility. I spoke to the players. Tomorrow is a big night for the club. For players, for fans, we need to enjoy this moment.”

On social media, he posted following the announcement:

“I arrived here four years ago with one dream. I wrote my name in the history of the club, won the trophy and left my mark, achieving it. Now there is a new journey right in front of us. Beautiful seasons are ahead.

“No matter what happens along the way, I only ask one thing. Stay united. There are highs and lows, but together, nothing is impossible. Come to your spur.”
