Gary Neville took the side of Reuben Amorim after criticising Marcus Rashford for claiming he struggled with Manchester United due to lack of consistent long-term planning.

Rather than commenting on Reuben Amorim’s work at Manchester United, Gary Neville told Marcus Rashford to focus on Barcelona. Rashford left the Boyad Club to join Barca on loan for the 2025-26 season, but was unable to help Amorim give his views on the work he holds in his hands at Old Trafford.

Rashford had some terrible criticisms against United. “To start the transition, you need to plan and stick to it,” he said last week that the rest is a football podcast.

“This is where you talk about being realistic about your situation. We had so many different managers, ideas, strategies to win, to win, to win that you’ve finished on anyone’s land.”

As Neville spoke about the situation in Amorim, his words came to light during a conversation with Sky Sports Monday night football. “I think the manager I should watch this season is United manager,” Neville said.

“Every eye is on him. Can he do that? He got off to a horrific start to his united career. He didn’t want to work midway through last season.”

Presenter David Jones said, “Don’t you think he’ll get no matter what happens this season?”

“Yeah, I don’t think it’s that easy,” replied Neville. “If he’s falling in the lower half of the table, I think he’ll be under a lot of pressure.”

Again, Jones asked this time: “What did Marcus Rashford say the other day, should Manchester United come up with a plan and stick to it somewhere?”

Neville held his hand and shook it, shook it, and said somewhat awful: “I don’t want to go to Marcus Rashford’s comments tonight, so he’s been there for ten years with the club and had the opportunity to influence the club. Reuben Amorim, I think we should do a good job this year.

What he saw from the opening game of Amorim with United and the season – what he saw from the 1-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday – Neville said:

“He put in a few different players, he got the (Mason) mount and got Luke Shaw at the left centreback, that helped, and I think it’s the first time, it’s difficult, I think it’s a rare system, it’s you’ve seen (Matheus) Kunhaplay, when you saw, Mount Play, watched the show show at the left centreback!

With a laugh, Jamie Carrager stopped: “It was one game!” United will continue their Premier League campaign with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
