Manchester United are still keen to sign the No. 6 holding midfielder at the summer transfer window, but moved from Carlos Barreva for the empty asking price in Brighton
Manchester United still appreciates the possibility of signing a central midfielder for the remainder of the summer transfer period after moving from Carlos Beleva.
United have spent £200 million this summer on Matthews Cuña, Brian Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesco and are now trying to offload unnecessary players. They are about to sell Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund to open up more additional possibilities.
Enhanced attacks has been a priority for Reuben Amorim this summer, but there are other areas he would like to strengthen too. One of them is at the midfield base where Casemiro began in Sunday’s opening Premier League match against Arsenal.
United had asked Brighton about the possibility of signing Baleba, but it was postponed at a asking price of £120 million. The 21-year-old Cameroon International has signed with Brighton until June 2028, with a £115 million price tag for Moise Skyco’s two-year-old sale to Chelsea set a precedent on the South Coast.

Amorim has not given up completely on signing No. 6. Athletic namings Morten Hjulmand and Adam Wharton are considered as alternatives. With already spending over £200 million, United must consider whether making another major signature is viable with benefits and sustainability rules to consider.
Hjulmand is very well known to Amorim, who worked with the captain of Sports Lisbon during the club. The 26-year-old is reportedly available for around £50 million, two years after signing from Lecce for just £15 million. He played 65 times in the sport under Amorim’s management, winning two Prime Raliga titles and Takade Portugal.
Wharton is turning his eyes to Crystal Palace, but Marc Guech and Ebebech Eze are in discussions to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively. The 21-year-old has four years left in a contract with the palace, and has other premier league clubs with admirers.
United have insisted that Amorim doesn’t need a new player, with Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Cobby Mine as options for holding the midfield and speaking ahead of the Arsenal match. “I’m really happy with the players,” he said when asked if they would sign a midfielder.
“They’re working really well and they have different players in that position so they’re ready to win a game with the players. Mason Mount is a player who I think can play in that position if they need something different.
Meanwhile, Brighton boss Fabian Hartseller is sure Valeva is staying. “It looks like he’s in a really good place. He’s having fun with his teammates. He enjoys being a Brighton player. I haven’t seen any major changes and I’m very confident tomorrow (he’s my belief), that’s my belief.”
