Former Evergreen England goalkeeper Peter Shilton is now in his 40s heading for the world record, which was filmed by Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio.
Almost 30 years after resigning from football, former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has finally lost the world record for his most appearances in the men’s games. Shilton’s tally is debated in itself, with the 75-year-old believing that he is three of a total of 1,390 world record guns, but also surpassing the higher numbers.
The new record holder is Fabio, who is also the goalkeeper. Perhaps even more impressive, the Brazilians achieved the feat without appearing on their country’s senior international side.
“There’s no reason to thank God for letting us experience this special moment and reach this enormous milestone,” said Fabio, 44, after playing 1,391 matches on the Fulmens side that won America de Cali on Tuesday. “It was moving to experience it very emotionally, especially during the compliments I was able to put my family by my side.
“It’s a great pleasure to get to this record wearing a Fulminence jersey. This opened the door for me. Now is the time to continue to make new achievements and strive for each game.”
Fabio began his career as a teenager in the 90s, playing for the third tier Uniao Bandarante before his first appearance in Brazil’s Serie A in 2000.

Despite not appearing in Brazil, Fabio has been called out from his country many times. He first sat on the bench at Selecao at the 2003 Confederations Cup. Dida and Giulio Cesar were two other senior keepers on the team, including World Cup-winning outfielders, including Ronaldinho and Cluberson.
His last senior Brazilian appeal came in 2011 due to friendly relations with Ghana. He never made a World Cup team, but he was an unused replacement for the 2004 Copa America victory.
Fabio was also part of the Fulminence team at the expanded Club World Cup in the US over the summer. He started all three games as the Brazilian side advanced from the groups that included Borussia Dortmund, Mamelodi Sundown and Ulsan HD.
Silton, who made his professional debut before the 1966 World Cup, counts 125 senior England caps and under 23 outings for his total. He played over 1,000 league games during his 30-year club career, and in the 1996-97 season he placed gloves after a spell with Leighton Orient.
He played for three Lions in three World Cups in 1982, 1986 and 1990. The second is best known for Diego Maradona’s “God’s Hand” goal in the game against Argentina, where England was removed from the tournament.
