Rico Lewis will snub Nottingham Forest and sign a new contract with Manchester City. Forest had made an official approach to City last week for a versatile defender, but he has now decided to stay.

The 20-year-old defender has made his way through City Academy and has appeared at the club 95 times. He was nurtured by Pep Guardiola. Pep Guardiola defended him in various positions and played 44 times last season.

Forest attempted to seduce the fullback by offering to double his wages on the city ground after teammate James McAtee signed for £25 million. However, Lewis says he is happy in City after a 4-0 win over the weekend, with the Daily Mail reporting he writes fresh terms with the club.

Lewis signs a new five-year contract to raise wages and commit to two more years. His decision was foreshadowed by Guardiola. Guardiola spoke to the defender after Forest’s approach and said he was confident in keeping him after opening the campaign with a fierce victory at Molyneux.

“I think he’ll stay. I think,” he said. “He told me that, but maybe tomorrow will change.

“For example, in the case of Phil (Foden), Rico, in the case of Nico O’Reilly, when they arrived here, they were 16 or 17 and we were winning the Premier League, so I have special sympathy. He’s an extraordinary player in his role.

“But he’s very small. If he’s tall, he’d say, ‘What a player.’ I think he’ll stay today, but I don’t know what will happen. ”

Forest’s interest came after discussions with City as the New Deal stagnated. He was removed from the team for the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace at the end of last season, but he made it clear that after the Wolf match he never really thought of leaving. “For me, I had never seen myself in another club,” Lewis said.

“I’ve always wanted to play for City. It’s my dream club and, as you see today, when I’m playing with the kind of players I play with, it brings out the best in me.

“Everyone wants guarantees and security, but at the end of the day it’s on top of me. It’s on me that performs. It’s on me that takes the chance. If I take my chance, I’ll do it.

“Last season I played more than I did last season. I want to play more this season than last season, so it’s always the same goal and become an established player.”

City didn’t sign right back to the summer transfer window, and Lewis started from there against the wolves before being replaced by Matthew Snunez.
