Ebeki Eze grew up worshiping Arsenal, and if they let their interests be made known, he was sure he was always going to choose a gunner – he was heartbroken when they released him at age 13
It’s set to be the biggest transfer robber as Tottenham ends up paying Emmanuel Petit’s taxi fare to sign Arsenal. However, as soon as Eberechi Eze receives the call, there was no doubt in his mind that he would snub Tottenham to sign his boyhood hero Arsenal.
This is a player who grew up worshiping Arsenal, and was heartbroken when he released him at the age of 13, and there’s a video from 2018 saying that he’s his favorite team on social media.
But Eze’s dramatic U-turn — from the brink of joining Tottenham to agreeing to terms with Arsenal — it’s a little deeper than desperate negotiations with Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
The seeds were sewn on the window much faster, when Eze turned his head and put his heart on Arsenal.
Eze, 27, realized how much the Arsenal manager appreciated him and his vision for the English player.

From that moment on, people around Eze claimed that even if he turned their minds to Arsenal and he was close to joining the Spurs, they always wanted to go to the other side of Seven Sisters Road.
Arsenal sports director Andrea Berta made his business this summer talking to as many players as he does with many more agents. But Eze stood out from the crowd and was the player Arsenal really wanted – but he struggled to make the total, and he was expanding and tailoring to the growing team.
What mattered was that they were sweating young man Ethan Nuwaneri and whether he would sign a new contract. Borussia Dortmund was banged for him, and there was real concern as they were far closer than Chelsea, who ended up seducing him.
However, Nuwaneri decided to stay, was given a mega contract and not a promise, but certainly a commitment to give him the first team the road and minutes. Arsenal sees both players as more central rather than broad players.
So, once Nuwaneri stayed, Eze’s route to Arsenal was much more difficult. They had signed players after players. Noni Maduke came for £52 million, but they haven’t yet offloaded Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard. They now have a very busy team in that department, but Arteta’s vision is that Eze can play wide to the left. He can play as No. 10. He can play in the center. He has strength, goals and real creative sparks.
He has so many qualities, and the deal suddenly became a go-er again when Arsenal was hit by losing Kai Herberts to a knee injury this week.
Eze is not the center forward, but offers options. He was able to play Viktor Gyokeres. He could be a competition for Martin Odegard. He can play big. That’s why he’s very attractive. He is also a bright character. It’s full of life, energy and enthusiasm. You’ll want him in the dressing room, and you’ll also show off that.
At the start of this window, Tottenham was weighing heavily against him. But because he piloted people, they didn’t think he would move anywhere. They obviously went first to Morgan Gibbs White. James Madison was then injured. That’s when the decision comes to be made for eze.
It was a saga depicted. The £68 million buyout clause has ended. The palace was also determined to play hardball. They played him in their first Premier League match, but the Spurs were still driving a hard bargain.
Honestly, if eze really, really wanted it, it could have happened sooner. But as soon as Arsenal arrived, everything changed. Petit brings back memories of 1997 when he discussed with Tottenham. Arsenal answered the phone and told him not to do anything until he spoke to them.
And to this day, former Arsenal vice-chairman David Daine still laughs about how the Spurs paid for talking with them for a taxi and joining the gunners. The Eze deal may just be heading towards similar legends and engulfing the material among fans.
