Liverpool left an empty seat in the dressing room in an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota after his tragic death in July. Jota and his brother died in a car accident in Spain, and Liverpool retired from the 20th shirt in his honor.

The club has also empty his place in Anfield’s dressing room as a heart-pounding reminder. There was plenty of other emotional respect for Jota as Liverpool launched a new Premier League campaign with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday.

Silence took place before kickoff, and a special mosaic was displayed on the stands in honor of Jota and his brother. Liverpool fans also chanted Jota’s name after the final whistle, a gesture that would bring Mohamed Sara back to tears.

Federico Chiesa, who set a key late goal to make Liverpool 3-2, gave an emotional interview after the victory. “More than anything, at Anfield, when you attack the KOP in the second half, it feels like the ball wants to get into the net,” Chiesa said.

“And today I want to think we had the help of Diogo and his brothers there too. Today was really emotional and after I scored my thoughts went to Diogo, Andre, his family who was here today.

“It was really emotional. The goal was for him. In my head, I think Diogo was helping me set this goal somewhere here, and I want to think that way. He’s always with us and he’s with us.

“Today was tough, but there was a great atmosphere. The fans were amazing throughout the game. I’m also really grateful for the songs they’re singing. It’s really, really emotional.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot revealed he turned to Jota while searching for a late goal against Bournemouth. “Usually, at 2-2, everyone knows which player I’m looking for at the moment,” Slot said.

“I wanted to bring in a Diogo Jota, but for some terrible reasons we couldn’t do it. But tonight, fans and players have done what they’ve done for us many times in the past.

“Bornemouth faced a team that never gave up. We lost a lot of players over the summer, but we didn’t lose our mentality.”
