Manchester United have revamped the frontline by signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, but Gary Neville is still concerned about Ruben Amorim’s side

Gary Neville is surprised that Manchester United blew over £200 million in attacking talent this summer, especially when they’re having unresolved issues elsewhere.

United have signed Matheus Cunha (£62.5 million from the wolf), Bryan Mbeumo (£71 million from Brentford) and Benjamin Sesko (£74 million from RB Leipzig) this summer. Reuben Amorim’s side took action to add fire to the 15th place finisher, scoring only 44 times in 38 Premier League matches last season.

They managed to attract the trio despite not being able to offer European football this season after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham in May. United have undoubtedly stepped up their offense, but the only arrival so far this summer is 18-year-old left-back Diego Leon.

Former United defender Neville is happy with the new signature, but believes there are still major issues that need to be addressed. He urged them to buy a new goalkeeper after Andre Onana struggled for consistency again last season.

“Mbeumo, Cunha, Sesko – look a lot at them at United,” Neville said on Sky Sports after Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-2. “I think Manchester United fans, including myself, are surprised they went and spent that level of money.

“We obviously thought that after the Europa League final, there wouldn’t be any money there at that level. So, to get these three players who look like a really good profile, two of them have Premier League experience – we need them to do well.

“We need a goalkeeper. There’s definitely a problem with defense and midfield. But if the three strikers really score a handful, United’s return in front of goal last season was really poor.

“We’ve seen Liverpool striker (Hugo Ekitike) do that tonight, and there’s no reason United striker can’t do it on Sunday.”

United will begin a campaign with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, with more to be added to their side until September 1st. The club is about to offload Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, so they can reinvest in Amorim’s team.

They prioritize holding midfielders, but also link to goalkeepers, including Paris Saint-Germain, Emimaltinez of Aston Villa, and Gen Luigi Don Narma, who is set to leave Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp.

Neville asked what a good season would be for United. “I think the top six is a good season, and the top four – Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and the city – are hard to challenge.

“But they managed to slip into places where there are other clubs, Newcastle, Tottenham and villas, so fifth place is absolutely amazing. Realistically, I think it’s probably sixth to eighth, but I think the fifth is a place you have to target.”
