Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney played the full-time match of his debut on Saturday after his move to Panditry, but not all fans were happy to see him on the program
Wayne Rooney made his debut as a regular match over the weekend – and fans were split into Manchester United legends. The former British man has moved to Punditry as part of the BBC’s new look programme for the 2025/26 campaign.
Rooney was reportedly offered a £800,000 contract by the BBC for his new role. And when the new season returned, his first moving opportunity came on Saturday.
Rooney was with fellow expert Alan Shearer, but Mark Chapman hosted the program for the first time since being appointed as a permanent lead. However, not all viewers were huge fans of Rooney’s debut.
On Twitter, one soccer fan said:
One fan replied: “Why???? He’s a former player with a top-level TOT and not someone who knows nothing about soccer, why doesn’t he have it?”

Viewers also said: “He was a great footballer who played at the top and won. But just because you did something, it’s not good for you to automatically talk, explain or teach others well.”
And while the reaction to Rooney’s debut was mixed, one fan had a particularly funny reaction to the broadcast, cruelly reflecting Tom Brady’s criticism of the legendary striker during his time in Birmingham. They write:
Rooney has lost his job since many difficult years as a manager. He was fired by Birmingham after only 15 games in charge, and the Bruce fell to League One shortly after.

Rooney was subsequently appointed boss of Plymouth Argyle ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but was responsible for just 25 games before being fired. And he has since hinted that he has no immediate ambition to return to the dugout.
