Manchester United may have fallen into a first-day Premier League defeat against Arsenal, but there was much to praise at Old Trafford. Several United players have provided encouragement for Reuben Amorim on overseeing a significantly improved campaign, but a positive outcome for Fulham this weekend is essential.
The Red Devils’ bright display at a 1-0 loss to Arsenal continues to win after two games and is quickly forgotten as pressure raises the notch. But Amorim should try to replicate his performance by keeping many of his team the same against the cottage.
Express Sport is looking at six players that should guarantee the start of their trip to Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Renee Yoro
Rennie Yoro appears destined to ultimately realize his potential as one of the best centre-backs in the world. He turned 20 in November and already appears to be suitable for Premier League football.
The French were very dominant in the air as part of a complimentary defensive display against Arsenal, strengthening his position among the names of the team sheets.
Matthijs de ligt
Matthijs de Ligt produced perhaps his most compelling performance as a unified defender to date.
The Dutch were determined with tackles and contributed to the attack by calmly bringing the ball into the midfield. He has to maintain his place before Harry Maguire for now.
Patrick Drug
Patrick Dorg continued to showcase a very promising glimpse of his left flank, including when he hit the post with a fierce effort that United fans could get used to.
He’s ready for a huge campaign and will likely start almost every Premier League match for the Red Devils.
Mason Mount
Realistically, if Benjamin Sesco speeds up, Mason Mount should be a sacrificed player, not Bruno Fernandez.
However, based on his performance against Arsenal, United No. 7 deserves to start the match. He has enjoyed his best fitness since joining the club and looks like a real asset.
Brian Mbemo
It’s easy. Bryan Mbeumo was disappointed that he clearly improved the quality of United’s offense and did not score his debut goal.
If Sesko is not ready to counter Fulham yet, Mbeumo can start centrally to accommodate the mount.
Matheus Cunha
Matheus Cunha was the best player on Sunday’s pitch. The idea of playing United without the Brazilian at the heart of things is already daunting.
He starts and once Amorim’s side scores goals and starts the score, it can be safely bet that Cunha will be involved regularly.
