Liverpool met with Crystal Palace after signing Mark Guech and Reds Captain Virgil van Dik.
Virgil Van Dijk has confirmed that he will “accelerate” Liverpool’s improvements by signing a new defender. The Reds discussed the moves of International Marcguech with Crystal Palace.
Liverpool won Bournemouth 4-2 in the Premier League opener on Friday thanks to two late strikes from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Sarah. However, their defensive performance has come for criticism, and they also confirmed twice to Community Shield Crystal Palace.
Liverpool has signed the new defender and brought in teenage prospect Giovanni Leoni from Palma, but BBC Sports reports that the club has also held initial consultations with the palace about Guech’s move.
The Palace is said to want around £40 million for the centre-back, who is closing his contract next summer, and Vandik was asked about the prospect of Liverpool signing a new defender after he wins Bournemouth.
“You can say you have to accelerate it (improvement), but it’s in the market,” Van Dik said. “We need to focus on what’s here, and while I think it’s been much better than the last game (defensibly), there’s still work to do.

“The manager is already playing with the right back (Jeremy Frimon) from the Bundesliga, and is 24 years old and says we’re trying to get used to defense.
“It takes time. That’s absolutely normal, but we played without the six Rien Grain Bellch.
“We acknowledged two goals at the moment of transition where we have to do better. That’s what we need to tackle.”
Van Dijk’s comments come after Palace President Steve Parish admitted that he could be forced to sell Guehi this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year. “Of course we’ll have to do that,” Parrish said.
“It’s a shame that the caliber players leave for free, which is a problem for us. Joachim (Andersen) went (to Fulham last summer).
“Then we had another bid in January, but that was a different situation. We need to see what happens. But we need a new contract or some kind of conclusion.”
