Romero captained the Spurs in the final stages of the Europa League victory and won the match player in the famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United, finishing the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
The Argentine centre-back joined Atalanta’s Spurs on an in-season loan in August 2021, and signed a permanent deal the following year with a reporting fee of £42.5 million, helping the club return to the UEFA Champions League.
Romero made 126 appearances for Tottenham and scored eight goals, including a UEFA Super Cup penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
He concludes 44 times in Argentina, supporting his country in 2022 with the World Cup glory and the Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.
Having recently announced Romero as the club’s captain, Frank said:
“I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his actions on the pitch, pushes his team forward in every respect, and he’s always pushing him off the pitch.”
The Spurs launched their league campaign with a 3-0 victory over Burnley. They are currently playing champion Manchester City in an early kickoff on Saturday, playing live on TNT Sports and Discovery+.
