Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gere has linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford after Red Devils boss Reuben Amorim issued a warning to Andre Onana
Manchester United reportedly appreciate the shocking moves of former goalkeeper David De Gere. The Spaniard spent 12 years at Old Trafford, making a total of 545 appearances in all competitions, winning the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and two League Cups.
De Gea left United in 2023 after his contract expired, and Erik Ten Hag decided to replace him with Andre Onana. After spending his season as a free agent, De Gea joined Fiorentina in 2024, and the 34-year-old was impressed in Italy.
After helping Fiorentina qualify for the conference league in sixth place last season, De Gea has signed a new contract that will run until 2028. However, Sun reports that his new deal includes release clauses that allow him to leave “relatively small amounts.”
The report says United are considering de Gere’s potential benefits after being “turned over” the clause. DeGia recently returned to Fiorentina and Old Trafford for pre-season friendship, teasing their “path may cross again.”
After being presented with a framed photo by United Captain Bruno Fernandez, De Guia wrote on social media:

“From the bottom of my heart – I want to thank you for the reception – to all the love you have shown me. To the supporters who have not stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again.”
Onana joined United from Inter Milan and has failed to persuade him since Reuben Amorim recently warned goalkeeper that No. 1 was under threat. “Andre seems like the other player,” Amorim said ahead of United’s opening game against Arsenal.
“I’m not going to say if one player is No. 1 because they all need to win their place. He’s ready to go to the game, so wait. As a coach, I can do better than last year.
Onana has confirmed 148 goals in two seasons with United, and the Red Devils have linked to many potential alternatives so far this summer. However, they have focused primarily on strengthening their attacks.
Over £200 million has been spent ahead of Benjamin Sesco, Brian Mbeumo and Matthew Cunha, while teenage left-back Diego Leon has also joined by Cerro Porteno.
