Gary Neville criticized Altai Bayindeal in goal for Riccardo Calfioli on Sunday during Manchester United’s defeat in the Premier League to Arsenal.
The Italian defender sprinted from the horn following a weak punch by the Red Devils shot stopper. A set-piece goal led Reuben Amorim’s side, despite the beginning of encouragement, left a pursuit at Old Trafford, and they failed to make the most of their control in the second half after falling to defeat.
Bayindir sued for a foul after the incident, due to contact from Gunners defender William Saliba. Val chose not to draw the attention of judge Simon Hooper in the case. And Neville simply felt that Bay Indeal’s efforts were not robust enough to deny the goal.
“It’s going to continue to unite,” Neville said from the commentary box. “The goalkeeper needs to be strong. I think he’ll complain that he’s been fouled. He has a player in front of him. There’s a lot of pushes and pushes going on. I think your goalkeeper has to be stronger.
“Don’t get that player out of the way. It’s Saliba. He’s not raising his arm. I don’t think he’s done anything wrong at all. If Byandir has his arm, he just releases it, it goes through his hand. It’s definitely a goal. He’s not strong enough.”
Commenting on BBC Radio 5 Live, Clinton Morrison said, “Manchester United need to strengthen their goalkeepers. There are top goalkeepers around, and you’re as good as goalkeepers.”
Bay Indeal was handed gloves as he realized Andre Onana had been omitted from Amorim’s matchday team at Old Trafford.
The former Milan and Ajax goalkeeper was on the sidelines throughout the preseason after being injured, but is now understood to be fully recovered.
Amorim explained that he simply wanted to reward players who were impressed during the summer preparations. However, the United manager left Door Ajar next week for Onana’s potential return.
He said: “Next week is a different life as we are choosing the best players in each game. This week we chose these players. No (he’s not injured), he’s recovered, but the others did well during the preseason, so I need to balance it.”
Before kickoff, Onana was spotted in the tunnel alongside United striker Rasmus Hojlund. Danish International was also removed from Amorim’s team after Benjamin Sesco’s arrival amid speculation about a potential departure this summer.
The new forward began the match between the replacements after completing his move to the club seven days ago. Mason Mount, Matthews Kuña and Brian Mbemo were entrusted with leading the United offense.
