Harry Maguire may have won Reuben Amorim, but his spell at Manchester United could have ended long before he arrived if he arrived for a move to West Ham
All Manchester United were due to sign French defender Benjamin Pavad two years ago. England centre-back Maguire has navigated dramatic highs and extreme lows since signing the Red Devils in July 2019 in a massive £80 million deal from Leicester City.
After a series of on-pitch errors and United legend Roy Keene called out to him multiple times, Maguire’s days at Old Trafford seemed to finally come to an end in the summer of 2023.
According to Sky Sports, United had agreed to a £30 million deal to sell Maguire to Hammer. However, after Iron’s long-term negotiations became more anxious, the movement fell apart. This is despite West Ham agreeing to personal terms with Maguire.

His failure to move to East London had a serious knock-on effect for United. The Red Devils needed £30 million to secure Pavad, which was last year’s contract in Bayern Munich. He has since switched to Inter Milan.
United had already spent nearly £200 million that summer with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hozilund. As for financial fair play, it was said that there would be a lot of wiggling room to stop trading with Pavad, now 29, without first banking Maguire’s funds.
The arrival of Reuben Amorim in November 2024 probably seemed to be the beginning of Maguire’s end. However, the Sheffield-born star returned to the team and demonstrated that he could still mix in the best despite finishing 15th in the Premier League last season.
This is Amorim’s faith in the defender who reports that despite widespread interest he is suggesting that Maguire is ready to keep him at the club. The problem is complicated by the fact that the former Leicester star has finished his contract next summer and is free to talk to overseas clubs in January.
On a massive faith show from Amorim, the former sports CP boss included Maguire in his six-man leadership group, along with Diogo Darotto, Lisandro Martinez, Tom Heaton, Nucea Mazraui and Captain Bruno Fernandez.
According to the email, Maguire is keen to sign an extension that will see the rest of his career at United unfold. The club is said to be happy with the arrangement, but the talk is not yet underway.
Maguire’s turnaround at United is nothing but a miracle. United legend Rio Ferdinand recently classified the player as if he was “returning from death.”
The former England star also admitted to talking to Maguire about his trial and hardships at Old Trafford. “We had that tough question. How about you criticizing? And the person who rose from the dead showed the characters,” Ferdinand said.
“He was down, but he’s back. So it was good to go under his skin and talk about it to show his character and resilience.”
