Title hopeful Arsenal landed perhaps the most eye-catching result of the Premier League opening weekend, but Mikel Arteta has plenty of unanswered questions to ponder
It was hardly a classic, but the away end was celebrated by familiar songs.
“1-0 to Arsenal” rang Old Trafford after the final whi as the gunners sat cleanly on winning an ugly win for change. Scrappy didn’t justify it, and the outcome was more familiar about failure than the new big money signatures on either side.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s David Raya was the man in the match, so it was decided by the story of the two keepers. United spent £200 million on the new front 3, and Brian Mbemo and Matthews Cunya were excellent, while Benjamin Sesco had a decent cameo as a slow replacement. But unless they sign the Keeper, all their good work elsewhere will be undermined.

Last season’s No. 1 Andre Onana has been frozen, Bayındır is hopeless on the cross, and they need to desperately close the gap. Arsenal’s own big money striker, £64 million hitman Victor Gyoker, was looking much better when Kai Herberts arrived, the visitors were heavy and ineffective. Martin Zubimendi has always been impressed.
However, Arsenal has not solved the left-hand issue for all their own big spending, as Gabriel Martinelli ran through blind alleys and Noni Madueke barely got a look when he came. Arsenal certainly wasn’t as sharp and ready as either rivals of either of their titles, Liverpool or Manchester City, but it can be argued that the victory at Old Trafford is still the most eye-catching result of the weekend.
Breaking this united side is not the result of a statement it once was, but holding a gritty, rebellious and determined victory is probably still a message of intention for the rest of the season. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal is enough to delve into and scrap these victories well. However, they showed real characters on days when their players were at their best.
It’s hard to read the first day too much. If so, United should be most encouraged by the threat of Mbemo and the brilliance of Cunya. However, United are due to Harry Maguire coming for an aviation threat in the set piece. There was some slow fear, a final groove clearance, but Arsenal held it.
Arsenal is a team that still has free kicks and corners from the boss. That was how Arsenal won the game, and the away end sang in shame. Declan Rice’s horns were whipped and there were plenty in the United Box due to all the warnings about pushes and pushes in the preseason.
Bayındır’s lame attempt at punch worked, with Riccardo Calafiori returning home just 13 minutes later. What did you start? However, Arsenal didn’t resolve and in any case United were in charge, providing a bigger threat. Patrick Dorgue’s low shot hit the post. Cunha’s amazing low-cross shot forced a sensational save from Raya.

Mbeumo’s header forced another great save from Raya, who looked like a giant when he put all his highballs in the box despite his size. Arsenal has gone through a repertoire of alternatives and their benches look very strong, but whether they subtract the gap between quality and X-factor (particularly the bottom left) that lacks depth, they need to win the title.
As for United, they look better than last season. Mbeumo and Cunha are exciting signatures, and when they fit perfectly, Sesko is only a handful. But they have to find a solution to the Keeper’s problem. And it’s no wonder why United is in the midfielder market as there’s a hole in the starting lineup.
But United look good and despite their frustration there are signs. Arsenal received rewards from high-risk, high-reward opening fixtures. No wonder Mikel Arteta looked so happy afterwards.
