Manchester United 1-1 Fiorentina: A unique goal ensured that the Red Devils were never a friendly and defeated in the final, friendly before facing Arsenal in the Premier League next week
Manchester United managed to win a draw as pre-season preparations ended in a 1-1 draw with Fiorentina. The Red Devils returned to Old Trafford with a new signature as Reuben Amorim was given the last chance to test his plans ahead of the new season.
Early in the match, no teams were shown ready to play Arsenal next week. The scandalous defense from the eight-minute corner gave the two bodies completely free and we saw Simon Sohm hit the ball for the first time past Altay Bayindir.
And while United settled down to dominate the position, the equalizer needed their horns and fortune. After putting enthusiastic pressure on his opponent, Robin Gossen put the ball into his own net to prevent Casemiro from being punished.
A flash of creativity emerged from the frontlines of Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha’s home team, but a clear opportunity wasn’t always close to former United goalkeeper David De Gea. The smart play between Mount and Bruno Fernandez offered United the best opportunity for Cunha, but Brazil International blocked an eight-yard effort at the end of the game.
Overall, it was a game that could not offer fans too much new concerns, but also taught them little about what they could hope for next season. Mirror Football looks at the point of story that arises from a collision.

United’s new frontline
It wasn’t surprising to see United attending Old Trafford, 22, after confirming Benjamin Sesco’s signature Saturday morning. The striker was presented to fans along with Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon and Bryan Mbeumo before kickoff.
It was Sesco who received the loudest cheers when he entered the theater of Dreams, and you may have the greatest hopes of finding the net soon. Cunha and Mbeumo faced Fiorentina, but Sesko is probably the last part of the new frontline.
“He’s really young. He’s good in the air. He’s good at running channels. He’s good at balls. So I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot.”
“Ben is the player that needs us to stop guys from working with all the information we have – that’s not the opposite! That’s important too.”
Amorim hopes that his new Front 3 will be able to find the net soon after it appears there is too little chance of opposition to the Italian opposition. However, interaction and playmaking from Cunha and Mbeumo give reason for optimism.
Mason Mount’s outing suggests that it should not be ruled out from the club’s opening XI. The former Chelsea man had plenty of talent to use as Sesco settled down and managed to maintain his place against Arsenal.
David de Gea Tribute
The goalkeeper returned to Manchester in 2023. It wasn’t surprising he went into the field to warm up and say hello to the United Stars in the tunnel and immediately saw a positive reception.
Applause didn’t stop there as he saw the reception where the first pause was active in possession. And the Spaniard showed some of his trademark talents.
After 30 minutes, De Gea rewind for years to save on Leny Yoro’s point blank range header and sent reminders to all attendees. During his time at United, few people were better as a shot stopper than DeGear, so he got an impressive response when he was swapped in the 87th minute.
The veteran is a rare legend that emerges from the relative fallow period when he defended the net for United’s final Premier League title more than a decade ago. It’s probably time to move on, but his quality is certainly highly appreciated.
Lockdown location
Prior to the game, Reuben Amorim spoke about the importance of keeping the minutes of the team to make sure the team is ready for the start of the season. One person with a consistent presence is defender Renny Yoro.
Despite his tender age, the French central defender began four of his five friendly matches. Yoro’s teammates on the backline have seen bigger rotations that Harry Maguire and Aiden Havens need time to speed up.
After the injury prevented him from making a simple impression 12 months ago, Yoro looks like a certain starter next week.
Transfer until you arrive?
Once the frontline addition is complete, United’s attention could change to midfield. While players may need to sell to promote important moves, Amorim will remind him that he still needs more depth.
It wasn’t long before Casemiro established that midfield combination with Bruno Fernandez was not the ideal make-up for a Portuguese coach. The Brazilians seemed a little slow to wait in the Premier League and United fans weren’t sure when they lost the ball at the edge of the box.
Perhaps Rasmus Hojlund is the player who helps to free up cash. Dane wanted to stay at Old Trafford, but the potential move to AC Milan could garner pace.
The loan with the option to sign Hojlund appears to be on the table, but Foorward is said to be reluctant to make temporary moves. However, for the attackers, the playing time was not intense.
Is United ready?
Manchester United’s transfer business and preseason performance probably brought some enthusiasm for the new Premier League campaign. Amorim already suggests that he can see the difference on his side.
“We can feel the improvements in the environment as we all have the right details in place to help us get better,” he wrote in his program notes. “The players we worked with last season look stronger and we made some important additions to the team.”
Freeing two players from the corner to go back at home was not a sign that all the details were complete. United’s forward play had a flash of creativity and talent, but it would be stretching to suggest that it was always convincing.
Fiorentina certainly isn’t Arsenal, but the gunners may leave the room more. Before we can be certain that we fixed the issue last season, there are still questions United should answer.
