Liverpool has linked to the summer dive of Crystal Palace captain Mark Guech, and the former Eagles star thinks his old teammate is a wise signature for the Reds

Joel Ward says his former Crystal Palace teammate Mark Guech is perfect for Liverpool in a fresh report linking the England defender to his move to Anfield.

Guehi, 25, is the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and his future remains uncertain. The palace cherishes the former Chelsea man for around £45 million, taking into account the status of the contract, and if he can’t sell before the transfer window closes, he risks losing him for free next summer.

Liverpool has spent just £300 million this summer and is understood to be keen to add centre-backs to the ranks before the transfer deadline next month.

Guehi is a player whose contract for Liverpool has been off in South London last year.

And Ward, who played with Guech for years at the palace before departing early this summer, thinks it’s not easy for Liverpool to pursue a deal for his old teammates.

“Looking at the make-up of the players Liverpool has, they need mobile and agile people, and Mark fits everything he needs, whether it’s now or more,” Ward told TNT Sports.

“Everyone who gets him is lucky to have a mark. He is a top player, a top guy, he is the leader.

“He has his eyes high and the sky is at his limit. He’s an incredible guy and an incredible player.”

Liverpool has only been recognized by three senior centre-backs in books by Virgil van Dick, Ibrahima Conate and Joe Gomez after selling Jarrell Quansas to Bayer Lebakusen this summer.

Sunday’s Community Shield showdown with Crystal Palace – Ward had spoken before – gave the Reds a good chance to see Guehi in action.

The match ended 2-2 after a goal from Hugo Ekicchique and Jeremy Fripon gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead, before Palace looted the late equalizer through Ismaila Saar. However, the Eagles won 3-2 on penalty. Justin Devenny stylishly dispatched a winning spot kick after mistakes from Mohamed Sarah, Alexis Mac Alistair and Harvey Elliott.
