The Premier League record scorer welcomed the defending champions as particularly well-versed – and they are still linked to his former club Newcastle United star striker Alexander Isaac

Alan Shearer was impressed with Liverpool’s transfer business this summer, highlighting two important signatures he is paying attention to.

The Premier League record scorer praised the defending champion for being particularly familiar with it. And they are still linked to his former club Newcastle United star striker Alexander Isaac.

Liverpool has already made many additions as they watched Trent Alexander Arnold, Louis Diaz and Darwin Nunes leave the club.

Right-back Jeremy Frimpong also arrived from a German club, while left-back Milos Kerkes was signed by Bournemouth. And, 54-year-old Shearer quickly pointed out their strong business in an exciting summer.

“The signature at Liverpool was really interesting,” Shearer said at the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection. “Right back, left back (Florian) Wirtz is one more. (Hugo) Ekitike is one more.

“There are a lot of fascinating bits to look forward to, and it will be interesting to see how he went after blowing the Portuguese League wide.

“Whether he can score (in the Premier League) or not, his goal (of numbers) is phenomenal.” The previous No. 9-turned commentator believes top-four spending is shaping a thrilling season in the Premier League.

He pointed to the fight that permeates that dominant square in Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a very interesting season,” he said.

“Chasing Pack – Newcastle, Villa, Brighton, Spurs, maybe Man United, maybe a few others – will be a fascinating season as the top four are somehow trying to get into the top four with what the top four spent in Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

“I’m really excited because some of the signatures (it was great), and obviously not finished yet.” Shearer himself scored 260 goals in the Premier League against Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

And while he expects excitement, he cannot foresee the great mess that comes from even further below the table. “I don’t think there’s any major surprises. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brighton was there for what they did,” he said.

“The villas are chasing, but they didn’t have as many signatures as they wanted, Bournemouth had to sell.

“The team that appeared at the bottom said history suggests it’s very difficult for these three to keep going.”

The Premier League record scorer was speaking at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026, featuring players from all 20 clubs in the league at Fanatics flagship store on Thursday at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026 kit.

He joined other legends like Stephen Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand, celebrating a new standalone range featuring legends and current stars.

And it brought a moment of nostalgia to the stars who recall the excitement of collecting cards as a young man.

“It clearly comes to mind all the World Cup and the Euro,” Shearer recalls. “It’s pretty addictive, isn’t it? Once you get it, you want to open up another one and another.

“I remember thinking, I opened one packet and I had to open another packet right away. That was my memory.”

The Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were launched by football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand, with Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo starring fans CEO Michael Rubin.
