James Madison suffered an ACL injury during a preseason match between Tottenham and Newcastle and misses most of the new season after undergoing surgery
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Madison admitted he was “grief” after suffering an ACL injury the night before the new season. After undergoing surgery, he missed most, if not all, of all the Spurs’ Premier League and Champions League campaigns and faces a fight to return to top speed in time for the 2026 World Cup.
Madison suffered an injury during a preseason match against Newcastle and felt visible pain while lying on the grass. He shared photos on Instagram with his three children, opening up the mental anguish that followed.
“The lowest I’ve ever had,” Madison wrote. “I am heartbroken by the fact that this injury occurred in my career. While all very cruel, as the Super Cup tomorrow, the Premier League season Horizon, the exciting Champions League campaign, and the World Cup year for England, the ACL reconstruction surgery was a success.
“To all my close friends and family, your support and love means absolutely everything to me. For those who have sent me a message on my social media platform to support me and my recovery, I am more grateful than you ever know, even when we personally don’t know each other.”
“And finally, to those who doubt, hate, and laugh.

Spurs’ new manager, Thomas Frank, will lead the team in the Premier League for the first time on Saturday, with Burnley visiting North London. Before that, there was a small problem with the Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Frank’s predecessor, Ange Postecoglou, put them in the game through last season’s Europa League victory. Since then, the new boss has been strengthened and Mohammed Kudus has arrived during the summer arrival, but Madison’s injuries have prompted the story of Crystal Palace star Evere Eze’s move.
Arsenal is also linked with Eze, who will likely cost a £60 million north club if they move this summer. Frank was asked about England International at his press conference ahead of the Super Cup, but he didn’t give much.
“There are a lot of great players out there. There are a few from the PSG team, but I don’t think you can buy it right now,” the former Brentford boss told reporters. “Generally, I only talk when I’m out of the player and I’m talking about whether something’s finished or not. I only talk about my player.”
