Marcus Rashford says former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho helped him to be “always angry.” The 27-year-old Rashford insisted that he would beate himself to the Red Devils if he didn’t play the perfect game, win or lose.

The Portuguese icon didn’t care how his team won – and his simple style had a major impact on England’s advance. Rashford, who is currently on season-long loan for Barcelona, was talking to Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on a football podcast.

From the linecars where United coaches had the biggest influence on him, Rashford checked out Louis Van Girl, Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskier. Rashford delved into all three different things and what surprised him the most with Mourinho, who managed the club from 2016 to 2018.

“Yeah, they’re different (all three coaches) but that’s because (it’s) we had so many different managers,” Rashford said of the 10 managers United had since 2013.

“It’s very difficult, it’s impossible for me to compare managers, but when you’re a player you’re developing, like at a younger age, you learn that you’ve never taught you anything before.

“Like Jose, I didn’t have a manager who was so persistent in winning before Jose. Van Girl wasn’t stuck on victory… He stuck on victory, but he wanted to play beautiful style of football. Jose doesn’t mind.

“Of course, as long as you win, if you can choose, he wants you to play well. But if you win, you win. You move on to the next game.”

Adding that Mourinho’s approach is a refreshing change for him, he said: “He (Mourinho) had this attitude, and at first I was confused throughout my development at United.

“But because we won, he’s the manager who is the winner, he doesn’t bring up points that we know we’ve won and we’ve lost that last game. But when we lose, he brings up points.

After months of speculation, Rashford finally left United. He joined Aston Villa at the turn of the year at just 7 years old. However, after scoring four goals under Unai Emery, he chose to join the Spanish giants this summer.

United boss Reuben Amorim is currently overseeing yet another new era at Old Trafford. United finished 15th last season, losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, asking them to identify what was wrong with their parent club. Rushford believes that the Red Devils have abandoned the “principles” planted by former legendary manager Alex Ferguson.

“When Ferguson was in charge, there were not only first team principles, but the academy-wide principles,” he said.

“So you can choose players from 15 years and they all understand the principles of playing Manchester United Way. A team that has been successful over a period of time has a principle that means that the incoming coaches and players will fit or add them.

“Sometimes, United were hungry to win, but it was reactionary. If your direction is constantly changing, you can’t expect to win the league.”
