John Terry has given up on his dream of getting a top job and revealed that he is no longer pursuing a business career. The former Chelsea defender has moved to coaching since wearing the boots in 2018. He was initially an assistant manager for Aston Villa’s Dean Smith, and helped him advance to the Premier League in 2019.
Terry was later interviewed by Newcastle and several League One clubs, but was never handed over the reins. His final senior coaching role took place in Leicester City, where he linked with Smith during the spell he was responsible for at King Power Stadium. The former England captain is currently working with Chelsea Academy and has given up on his ambition to become the manager of his first team.
He aired his complaints in a recent interview with the Sun, admitting that he was left “confusing” by some coaches who were given work before him.
“I definitely wanted it,” Terry said. “When I entered the villa, I had a great experience under Dean Smith and we got a promotion, it was incredible.
“As an assistant coach in the Premier League and as a player, as an individual captain in both Chelsea and the UK, I thought it was enough to get me a job.
“I’m not talking about my job in the Premier League or Championships, I’m working at the League One level. I didn’t even have a sense of smell. I had an interview.
“When I see someone managing today, that baffles me. In terms of ‘Are I frustrated?’, yes, there are a lot of good attributes to be a really good coach or a really good manager, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen. ”
Terry added that he no longer wants a management career, and that he has decided he will continue to work for Chelsea and enjoy the free time he is given.
“I finished in the coaching aspect,” Terry said. “I enjoy my life and work at Chelsea Academy. My role is part-time roles. I love working with my kids. I love passing on knowledge and experience to those boys.
“I’m not a coach at this point. I’m a mentor, ambassador. I went to a few jobs. I spent the day on my own. I’m enjoying a bit.
“I have time for myself, I play a little golf. I’m at the academy and I have family time too. That’s a really good balance for me.”
