Brian Mbemo revealed that Reuben Amorim set him “no target” before the 2025/26 season.
That may have led the Cameroonians to set some higher marks for their upcoming campaigns, but Mbeumo is talking to TNT Sports at United’s newly upgraded Carrington training ground – seeing things differently.
“No, he didn’t,” Mbeumo said. He was asked if his new boss, Amorim, had set a target contribution goal for him.
“I wasn’t like that either, I don’t think about this because I don’t like putting restrictions on myself.”
Teams struggling with goals last season – hitting just 44 goals in the league, the fifth-lowest goal – that ceilingless mindset is music to Amorim’s ears.
And from Mbeumo’s perspective, early chemistry is promising.
“I think that’s the mentality and joy he brings to training,” Mbeumo said of Amorim.
“I think he’s someone who likes to energize the pitch, and sometimes he has a smile or something.
“Cunha is a really good player. It’s always important to have a good automatic with your team and have a strong link before, so it’s good to be able to share some training on the pitch.
“(We do) some striker works, some forward works. I think we still have freedom in advance, but there are some principles to respect.
“I don’t expect anything (in terms of playing positions), and obviously, playing players will be the manager’s choice.
“Obviously, I think it’s important to be able to play a variety of positions, so I’m going to play it everywhere.”
“He looks like a cool guy,” Mbeumo added Sesco. “We’re just normal, we’re just having a normal conversation, he’s a good guy.
“I think it’s important, especially when you’re from another league and you really don’t know (to help people calm down).
“I think it’s important to make them already home. I think everyone does this naturally. We don’t actually calculate anything, but I think this is really important.”
As fans were fascinated by how the new Front 3 gelled, Mbeumo shared insights into the details he introduced from the pitch, which is driving his personal improvements.
“I think that’s a lot,” he said. “I have a lot of things around me, especially chefs, performance coaches, analysis.
“It’s all a job that I put in, especially in training. I always want to be better and I always get good revenue.
“Of course it’s not (at United) and it’s not everywhere, every time I arrive at something new, I try to get inspiration from people who know things and people who are doing something different to me.
“I’m always trying to figure out how this can help me, or how this can’t help me.
“To be honest, I thought it was crazy,” he admitted frankly. “When I arrived in the US for pre-season camp, the fan base was huge and I don’t really expect it until I actually get to the club and feel it.
“It’s impressive, of course, but in the end we play football to give people joy, so it’s nice to do that.”
When asked how Mbeumo plans to deal with increased exposure, he said, “It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world, so obviously there are a lot of expectations for people.
“Everything you are doing is seen by people, but I think you need to try and think about something else, not focusing on who is looking at you.
For that reason, Mbeumo has many off-pitch pursuits, is a keen chess player and enjoys the game that challenges his mind.
“It’s something that really helped me in my whole life, and I can do some things around football and make me think about something other than football,” he said.
“It’s important to think about football, of course, but at some point on your day it’s important to relax and think about something else.
United will begin the season in a week’s search for a jump start with last season’s runner-up Arsenal before their trip to Fulham.
However, Mbeumo appreciated that he was a successful season and hopes that United’s eyes will change next year as a route back to the UK’s top flight elite.
“In my personal opinion, I always want to finish as high as possible,” he said. “I would like to try to return to Europe as soon as possible.
“Of course, it will be difficult, it won’t be easy, we’re going to work a lot together.
“For Manchester United, we need to fight for this every year, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Man Utd should have a culture “at the heart of decision making”

He added:
“We just do some big work on this, we just try to be together and get the good spirit we have for now.
“I think this is the most important thing (thing) because everyone is helping others step up.”
