Manchester United won the Premier League Summer Series following a draw with Everton, but Bruno Fernandez was not impressed with his team’s performance against Toffee

Bruno Fernandez claimed Manchester United was “lazy” in the final tour game and said they must sign more before the new season. They won the Premier League Summer Series after winning 2-2 with Everton at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, beating West Ham and Bournemouth.

Fernandez, who played a 90-minute full minute, scored an opener from the penalty spot, but Reuben Amorim’s side gave up the lead twice, drawing a strong response from the skipper. “It’s been improved, but it’s not where we want it,” Fernandez said.

“It’s a football game, and there’s always passion there. No matter what happens, it happens. There was nothing spicy in it. It’s normal and part of the game.

“It’s positive (US tour) and building bonds with players is good. Today it looks a bit lazy and needs to change that.

“I don’t want to dig into anyone, but I think the club is doing their best they can in regards to all the financial situation they’re talking about. I don’t know about that, I’m not involved in it.

“We needed more quality to everyone step up a little bit more and do more to get into the starting lineup, and I think that’s what the clubs and managers are trying to do.

United finished last season with a worst finish for half a century. Fernandez had admitted that there must be a change in attitude and mentality after such an embarrassing campaign.

“It’s all the details, and the small details are important,” Fernandez said. “This football club can’t do anything off the pitch or off the pitch, because it’s too big in the world and it’s punished for it.

“You’re getting the attention of the media and your fans, and you have to be aware of that. With this club, the culture here wins and we need to get it back.

“I think it was always there, not just the victory mentality we needed, but obviously if you can’t win, you won’t show it.

“The club is trying to improve other things. The facilities have tried to improve, the teams, staff, a lot of things. A lot of people struggled with this and many people who worked at the club have had to continue for years.

“Fans are paying more for tickets and are grateful for all the effort they put into us, so now it’s up to us to pay it back on the pitch.”

Amorim said he welcomed such straight talk from Fernandez, and showed his skipper that United still knows there is much work to return to the main trophy challenge.

“We’re happy that players have that feeling,” Amorim said. “They say they understand the situation, so that’s a good feeling.

“At this club, we understand that everything is ups and downs. We understand that, but I prefer that feeling (UPS) over the other side.”
