Mason Greenwood is said to have been spitted by Aston Villa Ace Amadou Onana, causing a friendly, massive brawl with Marseille on Saturday. Tyrone Mings was seen grabbing Greenwood in his shirt, with several other players involved in the brawl during the match.
Mings tore a greenwood shirt over and tension boiled during the preseason fixture, played on Marseille’s Stud Verodrome. UEFA is not expected to issue disciplinary action against either side as it has no jurisdiction over pre-season friendly ones, but since then, shocking details surrounding the skirmish have emerged, and Greenwood is believed to be at the heart of things.
It is reported by the sun that Greenwood spits out in the direction of Onana and hacks him with a slow tackle in the 87th minute of the match. Greenwood received a yellow card for his role in the brawl and was soon replaced by Marseille boss Roberto deserbi.
The fiery nature of the contest spills over the touchline, with villa bosses Unai Emery and De Zerbi squared each other. This time it comes from Neil Maupai after Emery was unhappy with another heavy tackle.
Commenting on the incident after full time, former Brighton boss Deserbi said: “UNAI complained about my players, so it’s up to me to talk to them. The match got hot, but that might be people came to watch.
“What I liked was the stadium, the enthusiasm of the crowd and the atmosphere. We tasted it all. We played a great match with a very strong team led by one of Europe’s best coaches.
“There are no friendly matches or training sessions at this level. When you wear a jersey, you have to be 100%. Friday matches are completely different so you shouldn’t be kicked out.”
The next day, Villa completed the pre-season program and defeated Villarreal 2-0 at Spain’s Estadio de la Ceramica. The next West Midlands outfit will be on Saturday afternoon at Newcastle United’s home, with a match between Brentford and Crystal Palace before the first international break of the campaign.
