Mohamed Sarah called out UEFA after a brief tribute to Suleiman Al-Oud, a recently deceased Palestinian footballer. According to the Palestinian Football Association, Al Obeid was killed in an Israeli attack in South Gaza earlier this week. Known as “Palestine Pele,” he scored two goals for his country in 24 international appearances.
The forward was killed when Israeli forces attacked civilians waiting for humanitarian assistance, the Palestinian Football Association said. Israel denied shooting people waiting for assistance, but admitted to fire warning shots at those who were too close to the army. The death of Al-Oyd has been added to the growing list of sports enthusiasts who have died in Gaza since the start of the war, reports that at least 662 athletes and their parents have been killed.
Uefa wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in a brief tribute to Al-Obeid on Friday.
Sarah responded to a UEFA post the following day, noting that no details about Al Oud’s death were provided. He replied: “How did he die, where and why?”
Al Oud was born in Gaza and began his career with local team Kadamat Al Shati, joining the youth rank in 2005.
The striker had two more spells in the Khadamat Al-Shati and played for Gaza Sport between 2014 and 2016. He was 41 at the time of his death, leaving behind a wife and three children.
Meanwhile, Sarah has expressed her sympathy for the people of Gaza through the conflict. Two years ago, he donated to the Egyptian Red Cross to support relief efforts in the area.
In a previous social media post, the Liverpool winger called on world leaders to “prevent further massacres of all innocent souls and to immediately help the people of Gaza.”
“It’s not always easy to talk about in times like these,” Sarah said. “There’s been too much violence and too much heartbreaking atrocities. The escalations over the past few weeks are unbearable to witness.
“All lives must be sacred and protected. The genocide needs to stop. The families are torn apart. What is clear now is that humanitarian assistance to Gaza must be granted immediately.
“Last night’s hospital scene was horrifying. The Gaza people are in urgent need of food, water and medical supplies. I am calling on world leaders to gather together to prevent further massacres of all innocent souls. Humanity must win.”
