Manchester United will be looking to add another No 9 to their team before the new season, but Joshua Zirk is ready to compete for Reuben Amorim’s team spot
Joshua Zirk vowed to prove Manchester United’s worth despite fighting for his place and searching for a new striker.
Zirkzee endured a difficult debut season with United following a £36.5 million move from Bologna, scoring just seven goals from 49 appearances. United are pushing Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins to sign new strikers with the top target, and have already signed two forwards this summer with Mashus Kuña and Brian Mbemo.
However, Dutch forward Zirk said it would welcome competition from new arrivals and help bring out the best of him and his fellow attackers.
“I’m very confident, everyone is very confident,” Jilky said. “We are competing, so the position that coaches need for me is the position I play.
“I’m not worried about that because the coach knows me well, knows exactly what to do and has 100% confidence in the coach.

“That’s part of joining this club (competition). I’m not really worried because if there’s another striker coming in, I think it’s just a good competition.
“They (Cunha and Mbeumo) are two great players. We’ve seen it in training. We saw it last season too. We’re for the team and that’s what we all do.
“It’s all for the team and there’s no selfishness here. It’s not my mantra. If it helps the team, then it’s great. I’m not here to decide what’s fair and unfair here.
“The manager wants a goal, so that’s what I need to work on. That’s all. Ultimately, if you’re on top, you’re supposed to score a goal. I’m not going to take that fact away.”
Zirkzee’s lowest point last season came when he was booed by his own fans at Old Trafford in January.
He went straight down the tunnel and was visibly upset, but returned to the bench to reveal how the support of his teammates helped him through the ordeal.
“Everyone is always there for me,” Jilky said. “Of course, Bruno (Fernandez) is the captain. We have a great group. We are all there for each other, so every individual is doing his best for us all. In that case, I can lean on a lot of people on the team.”
Zirkzee said in a 2-1 victory over West Ham in the United’s US tour opening match due to an injury:
“It’s preseason. I pushed myself to be there for the Europa League final, not like last season. Now I just want to start the season.”
