The two soccer players tragically lost their lives in a horrific car accident in a road tunnel, and their third teammate was seriously injured. Danilo Boz and Fabio Rosa, 19-year-old stars of ASD Calcio Maniago Vajont of the Promogione League, the sixth tier of Italian football, were sadly killed at the scene. They were traveling in a car driven by teammate Andrea Zoccollette, who was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
The player was returning to Maniago’s hometown in northern Italy after a training session at nearby Pofabro. The first report suggests that Zoccoletto lost control of the Renault Twingo while entering the tunnel, heading towards the other side of the road.
The vehicle then collided head-on with a Volkswagen Tiguan driven by a 72-year-old woman and was taken to hospital. Her condition is currently unknown.
After the collision, Twingo’s passenger side hit the tunnel wall, causing it to collapse in part. The Bas del Corbera Tunnel, which runs from Furisanko to Maniago, is approximately 1 kilometer long.
The three players were said to be close friends who had just met again after summer vacation for training.
A club spokesperson announced that all sports activities had been cancelled due to tragedy.
The club expressed shock, saying:
“We are close to their families and loved ones due to this unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with full support.
“All Calcio Maniago Vajont activities are currently suspended until notification.”
The incident is under investigation.
