Alexander Isaac’s potential move to Liverpool is becoming a summer transfer story, with Michael Owen thinking he understands what’s going on through the minds of the Swedish people
Michael Owen has dismissed the notion that Alexander Isaac’s potential move from Newcastle United to Liverpool is motivated by money. The Newcastle striker recently expressed his desire to explore his options from St James Park, which has red alerted Liverpool.
Merseysiders first expressed interest in Arne Slot’s side before signing Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt for a whopping £799 million. They have already shattered Premier League transfer records this summer with Florian Wiltz’s £116 million signature. However, if you want to secure Isaac, the red may have to break again.

While many consider it a major factor in the player’s decision to switch clubs, Owen has argued that players like Isaac do not worry about the financial aspects of the transfer, reflecting his own move from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2004.
In an interview with Talksport, Owen lamented the impact on the Premier League’s competitiveness when players like ISAK chose to join the top tier team rather than helping the club grow at the current level. He said: “If a decent player becomes available, the big boys will come and eventually they will move.
“It’s sad because I want to compete in football, but put yourself in the player’s perspective. Without ambition, there’s nothing in soccer. You’re trying to win as much as you can and get to the best team.
“That’s what drives everyone. People will say it’s money, that’s not. Most soccer players just want to win the best teams, the best competitions and trophies. Unfortunately, this scenario never changes.”
Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle, has maintained his belief that Isaac remains in place when the transfer window closes. The Magpie Chief said: “He’s still our player.
“He has a contract with us. We control what is next for him, to some extent. We still want to believe that all the possibilities are available to us.
“My wish is for him to stay, but that’s not in full control. We have not received formal offers to Alex from any club.
Ekitike’s arrival took Liverpool’s summer spending to a £300 million milestone, marking the first window in the club’s history to reach this threshold. Nevertheless, Newcastle reportedly hit a £150 million valuation on ISAK, so the Reds may need to violate the £400 million barrier.
Liverpool also has free additional funding this summer following Louis Diaz’s £65 million switch to Bayern Munich.
ISAK lacks pre-season Asian tours for Magpies, and needs situations that require immediate sorting. Last year, Isak scored 27 goals and provided six assists in all competitions for Howe’s team. His outstanding moment came when he scored Newcastle’s extremely second goal in the final League Cup victory over the Reds at Wembley.
