England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was the hero in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Finals with Spain, but the Chelsea star was playing after suffering a terrible heartbreak.
Lioness hero Hanna Hampton has revealed that she will soon return to Japan to say goodbye to her late grandfather at the funeral after passing away two days before the UEFA Women’s European Championships. Hampton plays a pivotal role on Salina Wigman’s side and appears to have a line of brands waiting to support her thanks to her heroes.
She saved two penalties in the final shootout against Spain. The Chelsea shooting stopper, selected as a player for the match, appeared on Good Morning Britain and spoke about her first major international victory.
But while talking about the feelings she experienced in Switzerland, Hampton also talked about her grandfather’s passing. She made the announcement on her Instagram page, where she uploaded a photo of a Green England jersey with “grandpa” on her collar.

Hampton wrote: “Grandpa. Two days before the biggest tournament of my life, you left. It’s not yet realistic. When I heard your voice again, I kept thinking about one of your jokes, or what you managed to say everything and say everything and say everything.
“You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there: you were there. You looked, encouraged, taught. You taught me a lot, not just about football, but about life.
“I miss our chat. I miss saying, ‘Only our athletes understand’ – you have a slight grin at something special. You were. You got it.
Hampton, who came first after Mary Earps retired from international football, provided fans with insight into how she was passing through her head during the game. Good morning in the UK, Hampton said (through the man): “Sometimes I say I don’t like it, sometimes I say I love it.
“I thought I had to do a bit for the team and save the couple, but the first one against Sweden continued on and on.
Speaking to GMB presenters Kate Garraway and Ed Balls, Hampton said her granddad was her “extra help” and “remember I told him many times about what we want to achieve as a group and how proud he is.
“He always wanted to come to my football games and watch it on TV. He would call right away, which was tough at first. The girls were so helpful to get through it.
“My whole point was not to put it out because of sympathy. I don’t want people to continue to give all the hate comments and abuse because people don’t realize what’s going on in people’s lives.
“I don’t know if people are already at a low spot, but having that extra fuel can’t help them. People have the right to receive their opinions. Don’t get me wrong.
Hampton reveals to viewers that he will be returning to Midland for his grandfather’s funeral. She then intends to inspire England to a World Cup victory.
She confidently added: “We need to bring football home well. The Brazilian World Cup is incredible. We believe we can bring it home. We are sure the whole country will do so after the weekend.
