Manchester United hopes to turn the corner under Reuben Amorim in preparation for the start of the 2025-26 season, and the manager is confident that they can turn their fate back in Old Trafford’s new leadership group
Manchester United boss Reuben Amorim will look to six players to lead the team this season after forming a new leadership group.
Amorim wants a clean slate as he aims to turn the club’s fate following his disastrous final campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League in the 2025-26 season.
The former sports Lisbon boss fired after getting off to the worst start of the league season under Eric Tenhug, who was fired last October, before failing to stop corruption.
Amorim attempted to overhaul the team after lending Marcus Rashford, but Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have also been told to find a new club. Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Johnny Evans have been released.
He began the rebuild by signing two famous players in forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who arrived at £63.5 million and £710,000 respectively, but Amorim is not happy to stop there as he brings in Benjamin Sesco from RB Leipzig.

The manager also outlined the plans of the leadership group who hopes to be able to give the team more stability this season after seeing the team fall apart and succumb to 17 league defeats in 2024-25.
“We have a leadership group now,” Amorim said in a wide range of interviews. “It’s not just Bruno. It’s not just Harry. It’s six guys. They’re responsible for the group.
“There were a few things I had to deal with last year and this season you dealt with it. You have to do with you. You’re responsible. I think all of these small changes are helping the group.
“So it’s not just the oldest. Nous is my favorite character and I’m in the group because I’m trying to understand the dynamics of the group that I try to reach all the space. They’re responsible for putting everyone together.
“We feel more organized now. We’re getting better. What we eat, tours, actions on the pitch, rules. We know that they don’t deal with players like kids, not kids. But I think these little rules will help strengthen the group.
“I treat them as men, but they have the rules now, and that allows you to change the way you train. If you don’t train the right way, I have footage to show you – and I’ll show you to you in front of everyone.
In the same interview, Amorim revealed that he wanted to stay with United for 20 years, saying he was confident that he would bring back a good time to the club – but he admitted last season that he was afraid of knowing that his side would lose the game.
“It’s not a way to leave to go to the game, not to go back home after the game to tell the truth,” he said. “All the struggles we had in the game feel it before the game. That’s the hardest part. Going into the game and knowing we’re not competitive.”
