Saturday’s League 2 collision between Newport and Notts counties kicked off an hour late after two ambulances landed on the pitch to treat fans. The match finally began at 4pm as supporters got sick in the stands more than 30 minutes before the game was scheduled to kick off.
Two fans in the league were able to see their side again on Saturday with competitive action as the 2025/26 season began. The title-winning favourite, the MK Dons hosted Oldham Athletics, while Crew Alexandra traveled to Salford City, owned by the group led by former Manchester United stars David Beckham and Gary Neville.
Down in South Wales was a rapidly approaching Newport opener in Notts County, and there was concern among supporters after the Rodney Parade got sick.
And after emergency services were called, an ambulance landed on the pitch to provide supporters with a doctor’s appointment.
A second ambulance then arrived as club officials asked fans and media members to evacuate the stadium.
The Newport County X (formerly Twitter) page was behind the situation with a 2:26pm post.
“There’s a good chance that a delay to kickoff is possible, and details can be followed as soon as possible. We will send the best wishes to the individuals involved.”
Just after 3pm, Newport explained in his second post. “The medical situation is still ongoing, and the game is currently set to begin at a time of agreement when both teams can warm up well after the two air ambulances depart.
“We will keep our supporters up to date and continue to send well wishes to affected individuals.”
And ten minutes later, the third post stated: “The kickoff for today’s match is scheduled for 4pm. Everyone in Newport County will send their best wishes to the individuals involved, and we would also like to thank all our supporters for their patience.”
The second league 2 game was also delayed on Saturday after one of the assistant referees was injured midway through the first half.
The assistant umpire was replaced by a fourth official, and the club chief made an announcement through the PA system and sought support from fans who were qualified to serve as a umpire.
The match was suspended for more than 10 minutes as the player was off the pitch before the player finally resumed. The collision ended with a 0-0 draw.
