Manchester United were urged to sign former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. United hopes to bounce back from the worst Premier League campaign of the season and rank 15th last season.

They have already signed Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon and are set to close their deal with Bryan Mbeumo, but Mirror Football understands they want to sign a new midfielder as well after acknowledging that Ruben Amorim is an area of interest.

After United’s 0-0 draw with Leeds United before the season, Amorim said:

Former United midfielder Gordon Strachan believes Gallagher will be a great addition. “Man Utd doesn’t need to bite a little more. They need legs, real legs, real closure,” Strachan told OLBG.

“Can Conor Gallagher do that? Yes, he can definitely get his feet, he’s a good teammate. Does he have enough imagination?

“If you want to be topside, then there’s no longer a time of gorgeous players. So Conor Gallagher definitely has his feet. He’s robust. Does he have a goal?

“Does he have that talent? These players are hard to come. Do I take him with me compared to some of the players who have played for Man UTD in the past few years? Yes, I do.”

Gallagher came through Chelsea’s academy and left the club in 2024 and joined Atletico Madrid on a £34 million contract. The midfielder enjoyed an impressive first season in Spain. There, along with Samuel Reno and Nahiel Morina, he was one of three non-EU players.

The Spanish club is allowed for the team to have three players without EU citizenship, and the move of Thiago Armada from Botafogo this summer means they currently have four. As a result, Spanish outlet coops report that one of Gallagher, Reno and Morina will be departing.

But Miller Football is keen to keep Gallagher in the club by Atleti boss Diego Simeone, and with the three aside, he realizes that he is most used in the first team. However, Atletico is also considering whether he can count as an EU player, using Gallagher’s Irish heritage.

Atletico is already having a busy summer, signing Armada, Clement Lenlett, Juan Masso, Matteo Laggeri, Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso, selling Rodrigo Rickerm and Angel Correa. Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel and Reinildo Mandava also left after the contract was terminated.
