Rio Ferdinand was busy chatting with his former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick on his podcast when Sir Alex Ferguson entered the room to interrupt
Sir Alex Ferguson still orders respect for his former Manchester United player, even when he is suspended.
Ferguson left United in 2013 after 26 years at the helm of the club, and his impact on the club is still enormous. The 83-year-old coached hundreds of players while in charge at Old Trafford, and many of his works were life-changing.
Many of his former players are now trying to make their own path as managers. One of them recently appeared on a podcast for Rio Ferdinand. Michael Carrick joined Rio Ferdinand’s former United teammate to seek a detailed chat about his days at the club, his current crops and his insights as a coach for Carrick himself.
Carrick spoke about Paul Shoals geniuses, including Cobbie Mineau, Scott Matminai and Bruno Fernandez before Ferguson derailed the chat. Recorded in an empty restaurant, Ferguson’s gate shattered the recordings and could not see the camera or microphone.

Stepping into the shot, Ferguson suddenly said: “What is this? I’m not doing this podcast!” Ferdinand replied: “Is it okay boss? No, no, no.
Carrick added: “No, we’re finishing right now,” Ferguson replied: “Ah, are you just finishing?” Carrick: “Yeah, don’t worry, this isn’t for you.”
Ferdinand: “We’ll get a little food with you. You’re not dressed for the camera, boss. You’re not dressed up to the camera.” Carrick: “Coffee, boss, we’re with you. Did you think this was for you?”
Ferguson: “I’m sitting here. I just want to hear the nonsense you’re talking about!”
After sitting right behind the Ferdinand Off camera, Ferguson was still suspended. Five minutes later, his phone rang out very loudly, interrupting the conversation. But Ferdinand was clear: “It’s okay, it’s Gaffer, we just have to keep doing it!”
The respect that Ferdinand and Carrick are showing Ferguson should not be surprising given their respect for their former manager. Ferguson won 38 trophies during his tenure at United from 1986 to 2013. This includes 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions League titles.
He led the players in an authoritarian style. “He was an animal. Looking back at his age, how long he was with the club, his desire for the game, his desire to rebuild his team, it was crazy,” Ferdinand once reflected.
“Even in his last year of his time at Man United, he’s come earlier than anyone else. Nine out of ten, you’re out in the car and he’s still there.”
