It’s been almost a week since Lioness held the European crown with an astonishing victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final. Chloe Kelly transformed a decisive penalty in the shootout as Hannah Hampton soaked up in praise for her incredible performance between the sticks, and manager Sarina Wigman won her third consecutive Euro title.
The match itself is fascinating, Fallout is intriguing, and Wiegman’s response to the salty comments of the Spanish players, the fate of the English bounty, and the prospect of winning royal honor, all have attracted the attention of the public. Here, Express Sports brings you three biggest stories from the aftermath of Lioness’ victory in Switzerland…
The branded lioness of “Lucky”
Spain took more shots at the goal in the final on Sunday and saw more balls. Some of them felt that England was lucky to have won.
Captain Irene Paredes said La Roja “deserves better” and England “had had luck throughout the tournament.” Aitana Bonmati argued that Spain is “much better” than his opponent, and manager Montse Tome agreed to her skipper, saying, “We think it’s better, but soccer is a sport that doesn’t always mean that the best team wins.”
The winnings have been reduced
UEFA has secured £34 million in total prize money for all competing countries. Of that, £4.4 million will be allocated to champions, with around £1.75 million of that number being distributed to teams of 23 players, with an average of around £75,000 each.
Robert Salter, director of advisory firm Blick Rothenberg, has since pointed out that £788,900 of that £1.75 million will be taxed by the HMRC. For each player, it becomes a financial hit of around £34,000 each.
Salina Wigman responds to royal honor
The Dutch Weegmann has brought in incredible success to British football and she is now widely expected to receive the honorable honor for her achievements. The manager is a very beloved figure on these coasts and she was asked earlier this week about her prospects to pick up honors during her trip to 10 Downing Street.
She said: “I’m not thinking about it. I have that much respect from the UK and the royals as well. I think that’s the most important thing. I feel that it’s very special to have such respect from the UK.”
