Jess Carter decided to withdraw from social media after being racially abused online during England’s Euro 2025 campaign, with FA CEO Mark Bringham having his say
FA CEO Mark Bullingham recognizes that Lioness star Jess Carter needs to work to tackle online abuse after being racially abused by the Swiss woman Euro. Carter left social media after the abuse, urged the FA to involving British police.
England men’s stars Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka will come in a few years after the Euro 2020 final held in the summer of 2021, when they were subjected to racial abuse.
“I think it was strong in some cases. If you look at certain areas like “legal but harmful,” then that’s what it is. If the way the act is being carried out isn’t as strict, there is a real risk that it isn’t as strong as we would like it to be.
“Now, it is of Ofcom’s duty to make sure that they actually bring the person responsible for explaining social media platforms and have not seen any major advances in the last few years. I’d like to see it now.”
He said that the free agency had held meetings with social media platforms in recent years, but “I have never seen the progress I want to see.” One issue stems from the fact that some of the abuses (approximately half of them, estimated by Brillingham) come from overseas and are not in the jurisdiction of the UK authorities.

“If you look at the types of prevention, I think prevention is generally done by social media companies,” he added. “If you look at the prosecution, obviously we can only work with the UK police in general.
“When you work with some of the companies that support us, you can sometimes get prosecuted outside of the UK, but that’s really difficult and generally expensive.
“So if you can work with them, that’s good, but if you have the opportunity, make sure you can prosecute them. And I think people who commit these hate crimes should be prosecuted anywhere in the world.”
Bringham added that there are “multiple” instances of social media abuse when it comes to those who targeted Carter, reinforced the message that prevention is just as important as removing attack material. “I think all social media platforms could be much better,” he said.
“I think there is a lot of focus on removing content and it could be great at defeating content, but more importantly, they could be far better at preventing it, and helping prosecute when it happens.
“I don’t think certain platforms are worse than others. They want to see them as just portals, but in fact they need to be responsible as publishers and make sure that this vitriol and hate crime doesn’t appear on their site.”
