Manchester United are locked up in Brian Mbemo’s signature, but more transfers are expected at poor Old Trafford in the 2024-25 campaign
After the Red Devils had a peaceful 0-0 draw with Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday, Reuben Amorim picked Manchester United’s midfield as a potential area of concern.
United were off on the US preseason tour on Tuesday, but launched their preseason campaign in a match against bitter rivals at Strawberry Arena. However, both sides struggled with the appeal of the goal, so there was little to experience it.
United’s only summer signatures, Mateus Cunha and Diego Leon, both played in the first half and caught their eye.
However, as United need a better quality addition before the new Premier League campaign begins next month, Amorim gave an honest evaluation after the match, pointing out a “lack of pace” in United’s engine room.
He said: “It was a pre-season game. The gap between our sectors was sometimes too big.

“There’s a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, so you can find it difficult to win and bring the ball. But we’ve created a chance.”
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes played together in the middle of the first half, with Cunha and Toby Collyer heading ahead of them in dual No. 10 roles, while Collyer and Amad changed roles in the second half. Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte were midfield pairings for United for the second period.
United are expected to target the new No. 9 as they ultimately agreed to terms with Brentford on the move of Brian Mbemo, who is expected to receive medical care and confirm his move over the weekend.
But Amorim’s comments could be a hint that United will focus on adding midfield options after focusing on the offense.
At Cunha and Mbeumo, United secured two of the top Premier League forwards since last season, and Amorim was pleased with what he saw from Cunha, his first appearance at the club.
He states:
“I was watching it on another team last season, so I’m hoping for the same. Of course, I know that he and Bruno’s connection isn’t there yet, but that’s going to be a good connection.”
