Ella Tone revealed that her beloved grandmother had passed away hours before the midfielder helped England win the Euro. Toone was chosen to start for the Lioness in the final, and the defending champions ultimately defeated Spain on a penalty. Chloe Kelly won the decisive spot kick, holding the trophy that England lifted at Wembley three years ago.
England players and staff marked a historic victory in a parade of open-top buses through London’s streets on Tuesday. Toone was at the heart of the celebration alongside his teammates and manager Sarina Wiegman. However, on Thursday she went to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news that her grandmother had passed away hours before the final.
“Even the best and best life can hit you at the lowest low,” Tone wrote. “My Nana Maz took my final breath on the morning of the Euro final.
“Dad, it’s safe to know that you can see it from the best seats in the house with your favorites.
“There are not enough words I can say to summarise the person you are, but I am grateful that you were my Nanna.
“When you bet on Bookie that I will one day play for England, and the day you leave us, we will take it home again. You’ve always known that.
“Greeting to our angels out there, Grandpa has been waiting for you for a while. I love you all the time, our “famous” Nanna Maz. Hello Nan. That’s the gills. ”
Toone has received many supportive comments after revealing the sad news, and her English teammate Lauren Hemp says “sends a tony of love.”
Olympic runner Keely Hodgkinson “sends love to Ella and his family,” Manchester United midfielder Gabby George added:
Other players, including Beth Mead and Michelle Agyemang, left Red Heart emojis under the post while Tooone’s partner Joe Bunney simply wrote “Love You.”
Toone’s grandmother captured the hearts of English fans by appearing on the midfielder’s YouTube channel. In one video, which received almost 100,000 views, she heard her talk to Tone on the phone.
In an interview with the Telegraph in 2023, Tone said:
