The English women’s team made more history by winning the Euro 2025 Finals, even after falling behind and losing one of the team’s key players in the first half.
England won back-to-back European titles after the Lioness kicked Effen in the tense Euro 2025 final for Spain to maintain the crown they decided three years ago.
Salina Wigmann’s team headed to the Swiss tournament as one of their favourites. And they were responding to the bill by charging them all the way through Sunday’s Showpiece Final. There he revenged his defeat to Spain at the 2023 World Cup, defeating the world champion 3-1 by penalty.
Chloe Kelly – England’s match winner in the Euro 2022 final – plundered a decisive penalty after being introduced from the bench just before halftime as a replacement for struggling Lauren James.
However, Wiegman’s decision to start James on the left flank, suffering from an ankle injury, was considered a “large risk” by Ian Wright and played the game as an ITV critic.
“Major risk,” Wright said, analyzing James’ choice beforehand. “I think (Weegman) wasted a submarine there.

“She’s clearly not right. Not only that, she’s on the other side. I said she should be in the center, not on the left!
Wright ultimately proved right as James had to be withdrawn just before the break, but he didn’t have to worry about England’s game plan.
Kelly shines in her role as England’s super sub throughout the tournament, and her introduction from the bench became another famous night’s catalyst for the Lioness.
From the left, it was her cross that led her to the house from Alesia Russo’s head. And the 27-year-old Arsenal attacker was Switzerland’s coolest guy when she stepped up to send out the spot kick she won.
Kelly was selected after the match by Weigman. He praised her for showing that the character would return to her best after a challenging period.
She said of Kelly: “Every player has their own stories. Every story is incredible. Her story is public and I’m so happy with her. She’s been fighting to get back to her highest level. She really wanted to take that penalty.
