The European championship final between England and Spain was aired on Sunday by both the BBC and ITV, with a clear winner from the viewer’s perspective
The BBC celebrated with Lioness on Sunday when it won the audience’s battle with ITV. Peak viewers of 12.2 million viewers made history in the Euro 2025 final, beating Spain in penalties to back-to-back European championship titles.
With the 16.4 million peak viewership between the BBC and ITV, the Final was the most viewed television moment on all television channels of 2025. The BBC says broadcast peaked with 11.6 million people across all TV audiences of 1-59% of BBC.
This number is small in number of ITVs, which has peaked with just 4.2 million viewers. However, ITV is pleased with a 5% increase in viewing share compared to when Britain was in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final.
Beeb also took the lead between England and Spain in last year’s men’s European Championship final. This time, the pitch results were different, but it was still BBC day.

The Lioness boss hopes this summer’s tournament will have a lasting impact following record television viewers and attendance in Switzerland. “The way I went through this tournament was that I had my level up again and the strength of the game was through the roof,” Wigman said after the final.
“We hope to further boost the match not only for the UK but also for women.”
The Dutch coach added: “The staff are trying very hard. They want to support the team, they prepare everything and the players are lovely to work together. I’m sure tears will come later. It’s ‘What’s going on here!’ We’re just trying to win every game and when it works it’s really good. ”
