Manchester United have become a breakthrough in their quest to sign strikers, and Benjamin Sesco is now in their sights, with deals approaching. The Red Devils are scouting Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa and Sesco of RB Leipzig, seeking reliable scorers to lead the attack.
It is understood that an informal discussion with Leipzig about Sesko has begun, but no official bid has been made yet. Watkins was United’s biggest choice at first due to his Premier League experience. This is a recruitment strategy proven by the summer signatures of wolves Mateus Cuña and Brentford’s Brian Mbemo.
However, the 29-year-old Villa’s £60 million price tag at Watkins has become a hurdle to finalizing his contract with the English star. As a result, 22-year-old Sesko is considered a more feasible option given her younger age, despite having similar fees.
United are not without competition as Newcastle is also looking to Slovenia international as a potential alternative to Alexander Isaac if the £150 million striker moves to Liverpool.
Sesko has an impressive record of 39 goals in 87 games for Leipzig and 16 goals in 41 appearances for Slovenia, making him the desirable target for United manager Reuben Amorim, who is eager to tackle the team’s scoring plea.
Last season, United managed just 44 goals in the Premier League, and current strikers Rasmus Hozilund and Joshua Zirkusie were unable to provide consistent scoring performances to justify their offensive lead.
United reportedly approached the villa Watkins, but their offer of around £45 million was quickly denied as it was far inferior to the villa’s rating.
German insiders suggest that there is a gentleman’s agreement between Leipzig and Sesco, allowing him to depart for a fee of between £60 million and £70 million additional add-ons, but only for a few clubs.
Sesko has been on United’s radar for a while, and their recruitment director Christopher Vivell was able to contribute to the deal given his past connections between Leipzig and former Sesco club RB Salzburg.
United initially aimed to sign Liam Dellup this summer, but the Ipswich striker chose Chelsea instead. Several other strikers were considered, including Isaac and Chelsea’s Nicholas Jackson, but they were considered too expensive.
Newcastle still hopes to lure Sesco to Tyneside if Isaac departs and begins consultations with Leipzig and player representatives.
