After only a year in charge, Gerald Martino unveiled the reason behind the surprising departure from Intermiami. In an interview with Athletic, the Argentine coach said Lionel Messi was the first to learn about his decision.
“I called Leo and told him I needed to be in the rosary. The first half of the year would be complicated for me… It wasn’t a health issue, it was a very difficult personal issue behind my decision.

A cycle interrupted by a complete rise
Martino’s departure surprised the entire MLS. At the time, Intermiami dominated the table and appeared to be the top candidate for the playoffs. Under Martino’s leadership, the club won 35 of 67 matches, representing a 62% success rate with 16 losses and 16 draws.
“It was a project with much potential and room for growth. It was difficult to leave, but there was no way for me to stay,” the former Barcelona and Argentina coach added.
Rumors and explanations
After his resignation, there were reports pointing to tensions with David Beckham’s management in the sports area as the reason for his departure. But Martino is dull: “I had no issues with ownership or clubs. It was a personal issue, nothing more.”
Today, almost a year later, Martino looks forward to Javier Mascherano’s arrival in the Intermiami dugout. “He’s ready to break the ceiling for the Southern US title,” he said.
