Nottingham Forest and Gary Neville didn’t appear to be trying to see the eyes right away in the ongoing queue between the parties, due to the critic’s views on Evangelos Marinakis.
Nottingham Forest is seeking guarantees from Gary Neville ahead of the new Premier League season before returning to City Grounds. Tricky Tree banned former Manchester United from participating in the club’s final match last season against Chelsea in the media role.
The club has made the exception to Neville’s public explosion involving owner Evangelos Marinakis. There, following a recent 2-2 draw with Leicester City, he denounced the Chief of Mori for coming to the pitch with manager Nuno Espirito Santo and exchanging words.
Neville is not officially banned, but The Guardian reports that Salford City owners should not expect to be housed as things stand. The club wants to ensure that Neville will pay more attention in his language before discussing Marinakis.
Forest wrote to Sky Sports to formally complain about Neville after the Leicester match.
Neville posted on X: “Scandalous from the owner of that forest. “Nuno should negotiate an exit with him tonight! Forest fans, players and managers don’t deserve it.”

The Midlands team fought back with a strong, verbal statement, and hit “fake news” from those who suggested the owner was upset with Espirito Santo after Leicester’s late goal. The club said: “We urge former coaches and players in the game, as well as other public figures in the game, to resist the urge to rush to judge or fake news online, especially within injured players, especially if they don’t have the full facts and context.
“Unfounded, uninformed anger towards the purpose of personal social media traction is at least of all useless among injured players.”
In the aftermath, Neville responded to the podcast statement, saying in a sarcastic tone, “Sorry.”
However, it was not the first dropout that the parties suffered. In April 2024, Neville claimed that the club was acting like a “mafia gang.” As a result, Marinakis threatened legal action against Sky.
Forest received an apology for the language he used while discussing a statement Neville issued to explain his dissatisfaction with the judge’s decision after his defeat to Everton. In a statement, the broadcaster “discussed the language used with Gary and the possibility of causing the attacks.” Sky also apologised “for the violations that occurred.”
Neville has been working at City Grounds since these comments and was due to return to the game against Chelsea before being rejected for recognition. In response, Neville stated:
“Personally, I think it’s a shame that great clubs like Nottingham Forest have given back to making such decisions. They have all the rights to choose who they let go of to their stadium, but that’s a symptom of what’s happened in the past 12 months at the club.”
