EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — Scotland’s 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon announced Thursday his retirement from football. Oldest among over 1,250 players selected for world cup.
“It was an honor to represent you,” Gordon, a Midlothian centerpiece and former Celtic and Sunderland goalkeeper, said in a statement. video message on social media.
“I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Gordon did not play in the three World Cup group games as a backup to Angus Gunn, who joined Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes last week.
Gordon made his debut for Scotland in 2004 and went on to play 84 games, making him fifth in the national team’s all-time list.
The oldest player to take the field at the World Cup was Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned 41 in February.
